The “Kami Naman” movement has captured the nation’s attention the past months with its bold murals that have appeared across the country, emblazoned with the message “Kami Naman, 120M Filipinos”. This phrase, which translates to “What about us?”, echoes the collective sentiment of Filipinos yearning for change and progress amid ongoing national challenges.
With the POGO (Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators) controversies and the ongoing disputes in the West Philippine Sea making headlines nowadays, “Kami Naman” becomes a clear reminder to focus on progress and collective well-being. While these issues are significant, the murals call for a shift in perspective towards unity and advancement, urging the nation to prioritize constructive dialogue and positive change over discord and division.
The momentum of the movement was further amplified at the “Kalikasan, Kabataan, Kalayaan” (Nature, Youth, Freedom) festival, a vibrant celebration held last June 12, 2024 at the Cebu Technological University, Danao Campus in Cebu. Presented by the SAVE ME Movement (Students’ Actions Vital to the Environment and Mother Earth Movement), this event coincided with the celebration of Independence Day, highlighting the fitting advocacy of national freedom and progress.
The youth music festival featured performances by notable Filipino artists such as KZ Tandingan, Illest Morena, Yuki Sakamoto, Playertwo, and Over October. Their performances were a testament to the vibrant talent and passion inherent in the Filipino spirit. Hosted by CJ Villavicencio, the concert not only entertained but also showcased the SAVE ME Movement’s dedication to empowering the youth and inspiring a new generation of leaders. This aligns seamlessly with the “Kami Naman” initiative, emphasizing the critical role of the youth in shaping the nation’s future.
The first leg kicked off last April 9, 2024 at the Montalban Sports Complex in Rizal with the “Kalikasan, Kabataan, Kagitingan” (Nature, Youth, Valor) festival, in honor of Araw ng Kagitingan (Day of Valor). This event set the tone for a series of gatherings aimed at uniting the Filipino people and amplifying their voices.
“Kami Naman” signifies a plea from the people for a government that prioritizes their welfare, actively addresses their needs, and guides the country toward peace and stability. This resonant message advocates for a future where the interests of the Filipino people are championed, free from the obstacles of power struggles and personal agendas.
By embracing the spirit of “Kami Naman,” Filipinos are urged to look beyond current challenges and work collectively toward a brighter, more stable future.
