Kami Naman—end the violence!

In a time marked by escalating confrontations and harsh words, the Philippines finds itself at a crossroads, with the clamor for peace growing louder. The “Kami Naman” movement arises as a resonant voice against the chaos, urging leaders to forsake violence in favor of harmony and constructive discussion.

Violence, both physical and rhetorical, has long been a method of engagement in political disputes, but its effectiveness remains profoundly dubious. The notorious drug war spearheaded by former President Rodrigo Duterte, marked by its brutal approach to eradicating drug-related crime, left deep scars on the community and international relations. This era of physical violence under Duterte’s administration is a stark reminder of the dire consequences that such strategies can entail.

Now, as Duterte initiates a word war against incumbent President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. (BBM), the nation witnesses another form of violence—this time, verbal. The accusations fly thick and fast: from Duterte’s alleged “gentleman’s agreement” with China, compromising the country’s territorial integrity, to—as Duterte claims—Marcos’ purported moves to extend his presidency through constitutional changes, echoing the authoritarian tendencies of his father.

The tension between First Lady Liza Marcos and Vice President Sara Duterte takes on another level, reflecting the bitter division of our nation’s leadership.

“Kami Naman!” comes as a profound statement from the Filipino people. It’s a demand for our leaders to stop the cycles of violence and reconsider their approaches. How will endless quarreling unravel the tangled issues that face us? Is the pursuit of power worth the stagnation of our national development?

One thing is clear: it is time to end the violence. It’s time for leaders to rise above the fray and focus on policies and strategies that unite rather than divide, that build rather than destroy. This movement gives off hope that our leaders will listen and respond, guiding the nation towards a brighter future. As the voices of “Kami Naman” echo across the country, one can only hope that this plea does not fall on deaf ears but instead sparks a transformation towards a more peaceful, prosperous Philippines.
